Duke University Student Outed as Pornstar

Duke University Student Outed as Pornstar

  by    11   14

A freshman student at Duke University was discovered to be a performer in the porn industry by one of her fellow students. Word soon spread and so did opinions. She states in her XOjane.com article, “We need to give a voice to the women that are exploited and abused in the industry. Shaming and hurling names at them, the usual treatment we give sex workers, is not the way to achieve this.” She goes on to state that she is happy and feels empowered being in the porn industry.

Although many have openly supported her decision to be in the porn industry, for others it has raised more questions. They wonder how she could consider herself a feminist in an industry that glamorizes violence against women, or how her decision is considered to be a fight against the patriarchy. Others scorned her for this “mistake” she has made and made it clear how difficult it would be to get, or keep, a job in the future.

What I think…

The fear of female sexuality is nothing new. We have been conditioned to act in a “sexually acceptable” way over time, and when people transcend the sexual norm others are easily outraged. She has made it very clear that she is aware of all the consequences to being in the porn industry and she does not need people to tell her what she already knows. Whether she decides this decision may not have been the best for her or if she always finds this experience fulfilling, it is her journey that she will gain knowledge and form perspectives from as we all have in the choices we’ve made.

It is very difficult for some to grasp the concept of porn and what it is there for. Porn is not meant to educate people and is in no way meant to be an accurate depiction of real life sex. It is the performers job in porn to live out fantasies whether they are an interest to you or not. Fantasies are most often not a reflection of what you desire in real life and many mistake them to be. We all have them no matter how perverse or disturbing they may seem. This girl has made decisions to partake in sexual acts that are uncomfortable for some but enjoyable for many (and not just men).

Overall, everyone will not agree with her decision but this does not mean she should be shamed or berated for the choices she has made. This girl has made a conscious decision to fight against the oppression of female sexuality by being a performer in porn. Challenging this idea is fine as we all have a right to an opinion but she does not deserve to be slut-shamed or dehumanized.

  1. […] extremely tactless to watch the documentary take multiple stabs at random clips of Belle Knox, the Duke University student who was outed as a pornstar last year, and try and discredit many statements she made in the media. […]

To be revealed as anything that seems taboo to the naive majority makes you an instant target for ostracization. She’s a vulnerable girl who is discovered hiding her porn-star alter-ego. She’ll be thought of as a slut, a whore, a cunt, a prop, a common sex-toy, and the sad thing is she’ll be thought of in this light by people who, otherwise, would seem so humane, and, indeed, decent, but confronted with this kind of taboo news, otherwise decent, people can become so cold, and so very cruel. I would hate to be in her shoes, and face the juvenile sleazeballs who’ll surely try to take advantage of her. I just hope she doesn’t turn to drugs to try and escape the congregation-prejudice that will sully all of her intellectual features. A girl can be so versatile and smart beyond her years, and, yet, when faced with unruly prejudice she can lose that lust for knowledge, and become ruined by the hatred. All I can really say about this is that I hope this girl has strong, and compassionate, friends to support her.

It’s unbelievable how so many people look at just one thing at a persons life and immediately be blindsided on what they’re overlooking. I don’t know who this person is, what she’s like in her civilian life, but unless she’s doing some sort of illegal activity to fund her college education, she seems pretty okay in my book. I not college educated, I was never really book smart, but this person making the best out of her life and not many people can say that. Sometimes I get ousted for being a pro wrestling fan, people stating that it’s fake, it’s not real. Being into MMA, saying it’s too violet & filled with blood thirsty fans. Or even being into any comic book related. Stating that your a loser & you’ll never amount to anything. There is a quote I try to live by: “Don’t obsess over words so much, find the mean behind the words, then decide. You can find your own name, and your own future.” This quote was from the character Solid Snake from the “Metal Gear Solid” game series. Some time people forget how fictional people can influence a persons life. Also what she does for a living is a form of entertainment and sometimes people forget that. I’ve had fantasies of laying the smackdown on my boss the way “Stone Cold” Steve Austin has, but you need to find a balance between fantasy & reality. So many fans were able to live vicariously through him. This frat boy must have let his own ego got the best of him & let his fantasy come out at the wrong time with the wrong person. We as adults must learn tolerance to set an example for the future. Sure we’ll all have our disagreements, but if we don’t learn to grow, we’ll be stuck making the same mistakes we’ve done in the past. We must spend our time looking forward to the future and that’s what Belle Knox is doing. Getting an education for a brighter future. I hope we can all grow from this. Pornography is NOT the worst of humanity. Now if Miss. Knox is a terrorist, a cannibal, or just an all around asshole, then we have a problem…

People that are seemingly the “most intelligent”, as far as their education goes, can be just as intolerant or close minded as anyone else. Being book smart does not give you a pass to understand the world better, and you are a great example of that. As you said, you do not have a college education yet many of the college educated students who commented on a blog Belle Knox wrote were saying things that proved they were intolerant and not very self-aware. I admire Belle Knox as it’s taken a lot of courage to deal with the attention and pressure people have put on her. I wish her the best.

College broads in dorm rooms are doing FOR FREE everything this young lady is getting paid to do on camera.

    • Chanel Preston says:

Lol, absolutely. College is the time for people to branch out an experience new things. Sometimes their most “adventurous” sexual activities are explored in college.

  8. Chris says:

Well said, Chanel. Do you feel the backlash is worse for her because the school is one as prestigious as Duke, or would it be the same if she went to Indiana State or University of Rhode Island? Does her obvious intelligence (as seen by her XOJane blog) also cause people to get even more riled up? Like, it would be easier to forgive if she was naive or if “relying on her body” to make money was her only option?

    • Chanel Preston says:

I think it’s easy to overlook or excuse things when you feel the person is not as intelligent as you or does not have the same opportunities. Therefore, the school and her intelligence both strongly contribute to the backlash about her profession. Both of these factors force others too see her as a peer or someone they could possibly relate to, and if she’s doing something they don’t believe in for themselves then it is not so easily excusable.
