Duke University Student Outed as Pornstar
A freshman student at Duke University was discovered to be a performer in the porn industry by one of her fellow students. Word soon spread and so did opinions. She states in her XOjane.com article, “We need to give a voice to the women that are exploited and abused in the industry. Shaming and hurling names at them, the usual treatment we give sex workers, is not the way to achieve this.” She goes on to state that she is happy and feels empowered being in the porn industry.
Although many have openly supported her decision to be in the porn industry, for others it has raised more questions. They wonder how she could consider herself a feminist in an industry that glamorizes violence against women, or how her decision is considered to be a fight against the patriarchy. Others scorned her for this “mistake” she has made and made it clear how difficult it would be to get, or keep, a job in the future.
What I think…
The fear of female sexuality is nothing new. We have been conditioned to act in a “sexually acceptable” way over time, and when people transcend the sexual norm others are easily outraged. She has made it very clear that she is aware of all the consequences to being in the porn industry and she does not need people to tell her what she already knows. Whether she decides this decision may not have been the best for her or if she always finds this experience fulfilling, it is her journey that she will gain knowledge and form perspectives from as we all have in the choices we’ve made.
It is very difficult for some to grasp the concept of porn and what it is there for. Porn is not meant to educate people and is in no way meant to be an accurate depiction of real life sex. It is the performers job in porn to live out fantasies whether they are an interest to you or not. Fantasies are most often not a reflection of what you desire in real life and many mistake them to be. We all have them no matter how perverse or disturbing they may seem. This girl has made decisions to partake in sexual acts that are uncomfortable for some but enjoyable for many (and not just men).
Overall, everyone will not agree with her decision but this does not mean she should be shamed or berated for the choices she has made. This girl has made a conscious decision to fight against the oppression of female sexuality by being a performer in porn. Challenging this idea is fine as we all have a right to an opinion but she does not deserve to be slut-shamed or dehumanized.
